Extreme caution must be applied to burnisher use upon certain pumps.
I have encountered one so hard that it tore up the ball!

Even a cutter would not touch the "chilled" casting, so it had to be ground of the damage, before lapping, and then a final burnish.

I now suggest 60 degree tools instead of a ball.
And I now discourage any application of burnishers upon installed pumps (OHVs).

Liberty is too far in the hole from the previous productions to consider producing any more.

I'm sorry to hear this Cotten. It seems a batch of chilled iron made it through the foundry and into the pump bodies. Chilled iron can be as hard as glass.

And so, I have a question, can the srping pressure on the ball be increased? If so, how much? Just occured to me that something over the one and one half pound factory setting should still be okay. ??

On the other hand, I suppose that if the ball and seat don't match, then the spring pressure is somewhat irrelevant. ? On the other other hand, is it posible that with very light pressure, (or perhaps none if the spring is short, and not applying any pressure) that the ball could be sitting off to the side a bit?

Just some random thoughts, caused by too much coffee.

the bottom line is that the batch-production methods used by HD in those days means that individual units vary considerably. In this context, some bikes wet-sump quite badly, most do it to some extent and a very few, hardly at all. There isn't really a whole lot you can do about it apart from detaching the oil line, draining the oil, or taking out the crankcase drain plug and putting a pan underneath.
Shoot, a man could have a good weekend in Dallas with all that stuff...

I just did my 45 several months ago with one of these - See "Steve" viewtopic.php?f=6&t=9348&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=burnishing+tool&start=40

It worked great for me, might not work in all pumps but worth a try.
