Can anyone tell me the position on the generator shaft that the gear and oil slinger needs to sit? The new generators do not have the hole for the pin. I am having trouble deciding where to put the gear inb relation to the vent. Does the oil slinger ride right close to the vent cavity and what causes the vent spring to compress?

The end of the shaft is about flush with the hole in the gear. Not critical, I've got one bike with no slinger at all and it doesn't seem to spill any more or less than the others

The slinger was originally conceived as an air/oil separator but over time H-D realized it did little. By the Sportster years it had evolved to nothing more than a large fender washer and there was no longer a spring loaded contact point. It just spun in space. More to disrupt the direct air flow than actually separate anything.
