WLA Magneto

Would like to get hold of a Joe Hunt or Fairbanks magneto for a 45 WLA motor.
have searched the forum, but cannot find specific type that will fit without mods.
Any information available from members who might be able to offer advise.
I understand it is "buyer beware" and they are not cheap.
Thanks Keith

Re: WLA Magneto

Keith , any Sportster mag will work, no mods other than an aftermarket adapter plate that is attached to the circuit breaker boss, then set the timing, bolt it down and done. I try not to pay over $300 for a used one but they are getting more salty, just try to get one as complete as possible, Tim

Re: WLA Magneto

Good advise. Thanks!
So there is no advance/retard adjustment after its all bolted down?
How do you go starting if the mag is in the running position (full advance).
Keith
ps yes they are getting expensive

Re: WLA Magneto

You can use a mounting that will allow advance and retard, either manually or using the twist grip if desired, but it really is not necessary on a 45". Most are just locked at the advanced position without issues.

Re: WLA Magneto

45s are so easy to start the need for retard is negligible. Remember that fixed advance magnetos were on all early XLCH and they were startable, 45 is easy...

Re: WLA Magneto

After My XL broke my ankle I decided a way to retard the timing was very important.

Re: WLA Magneto

Keith,
As Robbie said, there's really no need to retard a 45 for starting, but if you want to do it, don't set it up to move with the twist grip. Go to Morris's web site and look at their retard/advance cap for the mag. This lets you adjust timing without moving the mag.
