Is it a absolute must tool to have??

Probably would have been a better start of this..

But, DO I have to use a very expensive pinion removal/installation tool to get the pinion gear off my 58FL engine for futher dissassembly.

OR, can I just use a small gear puller?

I do know that the nut is left handed thread.

Being I am a cheap SOB, I don't want to buy one if not necessary.

Or if someone has a homemade idea/tool other than a gear puller lemme know.

More importantly than pulling the gear (which it does with ease), it installs the gear exactly where it should be without going past (too deep into the cam gear case) its running position.

If you do not want to purchase it, see if you can borrow one or take it to a shop with the tool & pay them to pull the gear and later go back & pay them to reinstall it.

The '58 pinion is seated on a taper, the tool does not locate it, the taper does, as on all '54 up shafts.

My mistake, forgot about the shaft being a taper. Thank you for correcting me. Thinking small bearing bottom end. None the less, the tool is the best for removing the pinion gear cleanly.

George, the tool is fairly easy to fabricate. Take a look at various vendors for pics of the tool to get the idea of how it looks and works.

Thanks, but due to a work accident that required surgery to repair my left shoulder and 3 days in the hospital, AND almost 3 months off work.....I can not use my lathe, nor my milling machine.....

I got plenty of stuff to do, just am not physically able to do it

And can ya send me your email address again via PM, somehow, I managed to screw up and cant find it. Or I deleted it by my own stupidity.

I have another project going on, but it is LONG Distance.......most of it is in Portland, the engine and a pile of other parts that need to be sent to the US, are in the basement patiently waiting on me.
