Installing Modern Engine Sprocket Shaft Seal

Anyone install this new engine sprocket shaft seal on their 45 engine yet ? I was curious as to how installation is accomplished. I am assuming the installation is the same as with the old slinger style. Is it ?? Thanks, Pa

Pa, I haven't used the 45 unit, but I have used the knuckle/early pan unit a bunch. Same installation as the original slinger. I've also used the knuckle seal in a holder I made for a WR motor. I've used these seals with good results since Colony came out with them in the 70's.

I have always used these seals on the 45 engines, i even searched and found a replacement seal, sometimes you may have to polish a little off the housing for it to fit the race, they just go in like the slinger.

i can find my replacement seals and get you a seal number, last time i checked the manufacturer did not sell a replacement seal.

Hey Pa, let us know how the install goes. I have one of those seal kits on order. I will be fitting it with the engine together and in the frame, so am wondering how hard it will be to dig out the original seal with 35+ years of crud built up around it since last time I had the bottom end apart.

I am not going to use the modern seal since I have to split the cases to install it. The original slinger seal will knock out fairly easily on a press. You support the case half around the bearing and press the slinger seal out inwardly. The slinger is very soft steel and will not damage the bearing race as it slides out of the race.

LOL,well I guess that will be me too. I wil throw the new seal in a box until next time the cases come apart, mabye when my son rebuilds the bottom end in another 35 years time. for some reason I was thinking it went into the cases from the outside. Darn!

that was in the box ( ) of a NOS 1944 sprocket seal .

i have a good scan of this :

This seal was used only on later WLA models with the water fording equipmment (1944-1945).
It required a different bearing race (the retaining spring is in a different location).
The Colony seal replaces the stock part so it does not require the special race.

i had a doubt about it ( coz never ordered one from Colony )
i just thought this was a remanufacturing of the 44/54 stuff for late cases .

I re-ground a second groove for the snap-ring, (close to the oil hole) installed the snap ring, then used a .875"x 1.375" rubber coated oil seal. It was either .250" or .3125" wide, I would have to look back to be sure.
