WLC Transmission Reverse

God i love this forum... I just bought a set of reverse gears. I run a sidecar so it should be fun. not a must but nice. Where can i find kinda step by step on how to put them in ,including end play measurment ( if required ect). I need to replace some seal this coming winter so i will incorporate this mod a the same time . I have a 43 WLC.And now i will get the proper shifter gate... Thanks ahead guys

Re: WLC Transmission Reverse

No endplay adjustment is needed for the reverse idler gear. That gear rides on that large stubby looking shaft that seems to do nothing in a 3 speed gearbox. The other gear, the reverse gear itself, takes the place of the #2296-33A mainshaft spacing collar. End play is adjusted on the mainshaft as with all 41-73 transmissions. You will however need a reverse shifter gate. Your shifter lever gear is marked for 3 and R. As a 3 speed, the 3 on the shifter lever gear is mated to the beveled gear on your shifter drum. To change the timing to a reverse style, you mate that beveled gear to the R mark on the shifter lever gear.

More information on reverse gear transmissions can be found in Servicar service and parts books.

Ok started to remove the transmission off my bike . Have read what i had on the reverse set-up ( very little) but anyway. I have 3 gears that came when i ordered the reverse along with my sidecar ,and i only see 1 gear in parts manual Any ideals ???

Re: WLC Transmission Reverse

The center gear in you photo is the reverse idler gear #2365-41 or [new #36141-41] which goes on the stub shaft I mentioned. You still need the reverse gear #2296-41 or [new #35284-41, which takes the place of the 2296-33A or [new #35332-33] mainshaft spacing collar. You have the correct shifter clutch which is the part shown on the left in your photo. The gear in the right side of your photo looks like a low gear [ first gear ], instead a reverse gear.

Re: WLC Transmission Reverse

I count 19 teeth on it. It indicates a reverse gear for the mainshaft. Check the gear tooth count again and verify 19 teeth. Measure the width for .576" and the diameter for 2.542". I've not looked at a reverse gear for some time now but I believe the other side should have a raised shoulder on the face of it.

Re: WLC Transmission Reverse

Yes your absolutly right 19 teeth, and there also a small raised face on the other side .020 high. i have use my vernier and have similar measurement slightly off then yours but close i have .582 for od for width and 2.543 od So close enough to call it a reverse gear.I will go with these,i can now order my sproket from 45 depot and seals, gasket ect. Thanks a million for your help. Might ask again once in the thick of it. Frank

Re: WLC Transmission Reverse

Looks like you are good to go Bro. Mainshaft endplay, shifter clutchs and gear clearances will be the only thing you will need to readjust now to convert your tranny..
