Re: SH ID #'s
I don't know about the stars, but my 1980 shovel has the numbers stamped on the right front side horizontally right next to the front motor mount.
Re: SH ID #'s
Right Woody, as stated where most ID #'s are mine has indented stars and looks factory stamped. No after stamping hanky panky.
Re: SH ID #'s
That was more than likely sold as an over the counter replacement engine. I bought one like that from Budiler's H-D in Los Angeles back in the '70's. We referred to its four stars by calling it the general.
Re: SH ID #'s
Thanks Chris. I bought this bike many years ago and never match the numbers and one day I looked at the right side to match ID numbers to frame and to my surprise only stamped stars. Pink has same frame number & engine #'s. I thought the same, as a replacement motor somewhere along the way. I 've asked around and some said it was a CHP bike or Military bike. How would I register if I put in another frame without motor numbers, here in Calif. & my CHP is a @ick and everything he inspects is in his mind stolen & looks at you as a future inmate.
Re: SH ID #'s
You should contact Peter Sinet at H-D. He is their numbers man. 414 343 7730.
Re: SH ID #'s
Thanks Chris will do. Still open to other opinions, guys.
Re: SH ID #'s
In the late shovelhead era the engine numbers were moved to the left case at the cylinder base. The former number area on the right case was stamped with the stars until such time that HD 'rounded off' that flat in the early Evo's. I forget the exact year. Replacement cases ordered during this time were also starred on the right case.

Re: SH ID #'s
Thanks Jerry. I double checked motor & it has 4 stars & no #'s at the cyclinder base. I haven't checked the bottom of cases to see if there are matching #'s. Hope there are #'s & match.
Re: SH ID #'s
One year update on location of my SH ID#s Jerry W was right, found ID#s at left side cylinder base & not at right side like almost others have, mine had 4 stars. Factory stamped, This is the only one I have ever seen. Thanks Jerry W
