however on a serious note, from many years of restoring bikes of various descriptions, I am not at all convinced that the tinware on that machine is either original, or a matched set. It may well be of correct pattern, but that's not the same thing. The painted engine plates ( one of which is incorrectly mounted, as someone pointed out ) have clearly been dismantled before.

I remain of the opinion that this is someone's abandoned, older restoration project and I would be most interested to know quite HOW it would be possible to determine this. It's fairly easy with H-ds because there are plenty of them about, and most of the mis-matches and errors in repop parts are well known and fairly easy to spot.

I'm not a 100% certain but I don't think that there was enough interest or dollar value to merit anyone repoping Jr fenders until very recently. The few times the tanks were repoped they cost more than a running JR Scout. But the racers loved them.

chatting with the VMCC Indian specialist, I gather that the tinware on the 1940 Junior model ( mudguards and tanks ) is the same as used on the Scout, and I see the advert says the tanks are the same.

Forks are also the same according to VMCC, and I notice the advert refers to 'new forks'.

So, my reading of that would be that the 1940 Junior is a 'rationalised' version using as many parts as possible from the Scout. This suggests that there is no actual way of differentiating an 'authentic' Junior, a Junior restored using Scout forks and tinware, and a Junior restored using repop Scout tinware. The engine, gearbox and frame are model-specific, and can't be anything else.

I rest my case that this bike is, on the balance of probability and based on the visible condition of the tinware, a Junior Scout which has been the subject of a previous incomplete restoration using a combination of tanks and mudguards from at least three separate sources, one of which may have been the original bike.

I reiterate my previous suggestion that the owner enjoy his good fortune, and build a very nice little period bike at a very reasonable - nay, enviable - cost.

The fenders kinda resemble Scout but are smaller. No matter what the ad says the tanks weren't quite the same as The 40 Scout which had a relief for the speedometer and certainly not the same a Chief which had a different bolt pattern. Since you see 40 Jr Scouts with the narrow tanks I always assumed the ones with the Scout size tanks were an option, but that ad and Hatfield say otherwise. And according to Hatfield the 40 was called a Thirty-Fifty the JR Scout name was last used in 39.

1) it's not, in fact, a 1940 Junior Scout because no model of that name was ever listed, according to Hatfield and Indian's own advertising. If it's a 1940 model, it is a Thirty-Fifty

2) It is certainly a Junior Scout because the frame, engine and transmission are model-specific

3) the paint on the mudguards and tank don't match, and the tank has clearly been partly restored at some time, judging by the primer on the front. From experience of as-found bikes, I'd say it is far too clean to have been in storage untouched since the 1960s, but it's too dusty to be a recently abandoned project.

Please look at this, The rear frame is not 741 as you can see the casting for the bolt on hanging transmission as used in Juniors and Princes. The Front Frame is not 741 as you can tell by the larger than 741 generator casting and the front and rear Shifter castings, 741 only has a rear. 741 never had skirted fenders, these are Junior Fenders or correctly called 30.50 in 1940.

I am by no means an Indian expert, but the front frame is 741, noted by straight (vertical) seat tube, and oval dash...rear frame does not have vertical suports in front of rear axle leading me to believe it was also 741, but upon further review, it may be a later vertical twin scout/Brit rear end adapted...the tranny jumps out at me as unusual, but since my wreck/project doesn't have a tranny I couldn't say for sure...Motor mounts, front pair mounted on rear...

The rear fender is strange to me... but I can't see enough of the front one to say any more. 30.50 is rght for the 741, I don't know enough about junior scouts to comment on similarities to 741.

There are many much wiser, experienced (better looking) Indian enthusiasts on this site that will be able to offer much more meaningful information than my Mr. Obvious observations. It is still a great find.
