Was there a provision for retarding timing on these setups for starting? Or were they set at a single adjustment?

If he really used the original -36 distributor (10 spiral teeth), I have no idea how to drive it using any H-D parts. The original cam spiral won't work if the breaker shaft is rotated 90°.
Why would you need the timer when your are firing the cylinders with a magneto?
