horzontal magneto thoughts

I am playing with a new project and thinking about mounting a mag in the generator location of an iron head sporty motor. What I am looking for is some resources to use as reference material. I would like to end up with something similar to what they used on the xr bikes. I am able to fabricate / machine any brackets or gears necessary. I just don’t want to waste to much time reinventing stuff that has already been figured out by others. I have looked around for used xr parts but they seem somewhat scarce and rather expensive, plus I already have a few mags I could modify for the project. The cases are already modified as I bored them out for oversize Trock Shovster jugs. So if some welding and machining is necessary that doesn’t bother me.

Panics stuff should give you what you need. The mag drive gear is repoped by John Penner in SoCal. The idler gear is available from hd with a -55r part number from the xr racing parts book.

The 36 teeth drive gear on cam # 2 has the same diameter and width as the idler gear you need for a front magneto. It can be moded to add a new centre piece to accept the 2 ball bearings.

Since on KR, XLR, XR, the mag gear is not in line with the cam # 4 gear, the iddler gear needs the extra width to take care of the offset.

On later Sportster # 2 P cams, the 36 teeth gear is just pressed on the shaft. I'm doing the same thing at the moment, pinched it on a XL grind cam I'll never use...

Thanks Patrick, that is the kind of info I need, using a #2 cam gear makes sense and I think have one around here with a pitted lobe non-the-less. What are you planning to do regarding timing adjustment?

Late reply, was on holiday in Scotland...

Gear on magneto is not keyed, so move around to get timing right before tightening locknut. Finer adjustments possible later on as well since the magneto adaptor plate can be rotated by a few degrees.

About the factory drg of the Pan/Knuckle magneto drive... Got mine on Milwaukee Belle/Eric's web Beauty of Speed... But who's had it 1st up

Thanks to Jim Haubert, this is the iddler dimms for KR, XLR and XR:



2 metric ball bearings in the centre, same as KR cam ball bearings, 9mm ID x 24mm OD x 7mm W, ref 609 at your local supplier

I agree with beachdog,use John PENNERS' gear he repos and the gear straight out of the XR 750 parts catalog. This is the route I used several years ago on the KR-WL. BREWSKI

I am making the adaptor plate to fit the FM mag that was used to mount it to the KR's and the early XR750's.
The gears and idler are available from Carl Patrick.
Andy at antique speed and machine has complete Wico vertical and horizontal mags and all the gears including the virnier.
He also is making the chain drive set up as is pictured on the previously posted drawings.

This can be done to a Pan or early Shovel with gears also.

My friend has run a Stock HD Circuit Breaker at the generator drive on his 66 Shovel for years. It was set up with the right combination of gear blanks. There is an adapter plate that bolts in where the gen was and the Circuit Breaker mounts to that. He is running an alternator left case for the charging system. It took a little messing with gears to get the right ratio, but it works fine.

The bike is about 75 miles from here, but I will see if I can get his Wife to take me some pics. I may be up that way soon. I will say I Have Seen it, Ridden with It, and it is what it is and it works! I have asked him before, why, and was simply told, Why Not!
