640 front end

So I have the front end completely disassembled...the lower links are obviously left and right specific.

The upper links carry different part numbers, but I am having trouble detrermining left/right.

This isn't a problem since I have left/right differentiation compulsion since childhood, but other than having one that came off right side or left, how do you tell???

Hint they both wont slide up to the bolt head.

Thanks Dave...I had the uppers still on the shafts to keep them apart. Didn't think about the difference being threaded/non-threaded, out of sight out of mind.

BTW- those pics you supplied of the dash mount resulted in a great part milled & installed on my frame.

If you need any other pics you better hurry I got the prototype stroker flywheels that use Sporty rods from Truett & Osbourn (I've been waiting on these forever) just before Christmas and hope to be riding it again before spring.

What pin goes on those wheels & sporty rods? I am using Rocky's pin w/sporty rods & chief wheels.

Which pinion does that require?

They use Sporty Rod pin and Scout pinion. Just getting ready to try the first set.

In re-assembly, do those two locking nuts on top of the stem butt up to fork crown w/o a washer/spacer???

I have seen them 2 ways. If they only have 1 nut they use a tabbed bend over washer. If they have 2 nuts they just jam together. The parts books show the washer on both versions. But since I bought my first Scout in 1963 I have never seen them any other way. Greer lists the washer.

That was my impression, one nut= washer, two nuts= no washer.

Also, for the ride control compression wafers/discs at the bottom of the fork, the (four legged) spring washer looks like it goes on TOP of the wafer for the ride control?

On mine, it was on the very bottom upon disassembly...most catalogs insinuate it goes on top but
I have not seen a good explosion reference beside Greer's.
