Weird Timer

Has anyone ever seen a points set up like this. I bought this timer off Ebay, and it is kind of rusty, but I really wanted the timer cap so i can mount an electronic ignition on it, and swap it with my points set up. Hope to get the electronic to time out right. Pain to time these with a timing light. It always spits too much oil out to get it to time out with a light. I was thinking of puting a peice of clear plastic over the hole and then trying again. It would be nice to time it on some other part of the bike, like the generator, or ?

I believe it's a '47 & '48 timer.......uses old style points internally with new looking style outside.

Why not just use a clear timing hole plug like this ?

I took a small paint brush like you paint model planes with and 1st used a little acetone to wash any oil off my flywheel timing mark through the open timing hole.
Then with the brush I painted the mark itself bright yellow and let it dry overnight. When I used a clear plug like this the mark showed up great with no spray.

Ya know Tim, I have one of those for my old '88 1200 sportster, and have never even thought about if it would fit the KH. I will let you know.... Bright orange would work nice also on the silver surface. Thanks, Barry

Is it not just easier to time the engine the Proper way, as Illustrated and Specified in the Book?

If you must use a light, the hollow rubber plug is the way to go. Little or no spray, depending on the flywheels, and the soft rubber wipes the oil off the wheel for a clear view of the mark.

Thanks for all the input! I think the rubber tube/hose idea is grand! A piece of heater hose will likely do the trick, as long has it is cut long enough so it does not get sucked into the cases by the flywheel! It would be a real pain to get out of there, and would likely clog up the oil pump breather...

I use a simple test light when I am running the points and it is dirt simple to set them that way, but I want to use this other timer base plate to run an electronic ignition on, so I can easily swap them out. It has lines for static timing, but I have had trouble with it before so I am trying a few suggestions for it.

Barry, there is a simple solution to the oil in the face problem, just have someone lean the bike over the other way, it works like a charm...Mike

Actually Mike that sounds like a very good way to do it. Then one person could adjust the timer while the other checks the light! I think I will try that, along with the hose thing. I just have to have to get some time to do it.... It is winter, and I sell Subaru cars, so I have very little free time. Thanks again!

I have one too. It uses the old style points with the later style advance cable set up.
