Right hand shift UL tanks

I came across these tanks yesterday by the weirdest coincidence... Complete with crosshaft, shifter arm and hardware.
Still new, never mounted on a bike.




I heard Harley got NYPD a few right shift Flatties in the 1930's (?) but this tank is from the 1940's.

Does anyone on here know anything about the story of these? I sure would like to know...

Right hand shift was an option for many years. The tanks show up now and then. But the linkage and shift gate is impossible to find.

Ok, but since these tanks are from the 1940's;
I'm getting confused about the fact that they don't have or have had any mounts for the emblems.

I have new old stock tanks, red with silver pin stripe, No badges or deluxe strips.

These are knuckle tanks.

I purchased these from Leonard Andres, They came from his dealership on India street San Diego H-D.

Although i got them at XHD Inc. a company Leonard and Brad Andres formed after he sold the dealership.

Once upon a time,
I pulled a '40 ULH out of a barnfull that was set up left-hand, but had a right-hand shift tank as well.

It was a couple of decades before I identified a crossover bracket from the same cache. Its available for trade.

Lots of tanks in the '40s and '50s were supplied by H-D for police use without emblem brackets. I have had NOS ones in the past. Not all that unusual. The right side shift tanks with no emblem mounts were likely intended for something similar.
