20k check up staff infection

Just got a 20k service.
Now, My primary chain sounds like it's flapping against the case.
I think they left the tensionor loose.
Do I bring it back , or open it myself.

I brought it back,and explained the situation.
They could not find the source of the noise for over 4 hours.
They brought me back where my bike was on the operating table.
Four technicians stood around the bike deliberating and listening with a stethascope.
The Cam cover was off and the chain was in spec.
We decided to look at the cam tensioners.
Found that the cam bearing was disinigrating. Silver metal at the base of the oil pump.
They didn't do anything wrong on the 20k check up that I could decern.
20000 miles and the cam bearing is shot causing a total bottom rebuild?
I am pissed. Not at the good Harley techs. but the designers of the cam section of the twin 88.

Buy the S&S gear drive and better bearings never have that problem again

4 techs & 4 hours............... 20K service SHOULD have had the cam chest inspected.. Got to on those TCs'

Before you decide on 'gear-drive' you really should have the run-out checked.. Some have been told my HD techs ? that .030 run-out is acceptable..

Not for gear drive.. or long life motor..

Harley admits the defect and offered a 50,000 mile 5 year waranty on the cam gear instead of a recall.
My Harley is 2000 year. 4 years to laate but way under the milage "MISSED IT BY THAT MUCH" I am going to call them anyway.

Putting on new tensioners (hydraulic) and the redesigned bearing.

A gear drive instead of the chain and tensioner setup? I don't know how that works.
I will look into it. I will have to be quick, they are working on the bike now.

I could have known there was a "pseuado" recall on the "REAR CAM BEARING" on the exact vin number of my bike.
I typed my vin number into Harley's site and the tech sheet came up for my year,make,and model along with the known cam problem..
I would suggest everyone type there VIN in the harley site and detect problems early. It will be less costly than having pieces of metal throughout the oiling system.
A colonoscopy and prostate check would be recommended for the designer,,,,, everytime one of the cams decides to self distruct..

The cam tensioners and lifters should last 30 K they tell me. A buddy lost the rollers out of his lifters at 24k He lucked out and didn't send any through the oil pump. The tensioner shoes were completely worn out.
The gear drive setup is the way to go. S&S has a really good setup. I'm told to use the new hydraulic tensioners if you decide to stay with the chain.

Make sure you check to see if the crank gear (pinion gear) is fiting the shaft tightly. The stock gear is powdered metal and mine was loose as a goose. I found an Andrews that fit nice and tight...Mike

I got it back and it is running great. The guys at Stormy Hill were Great. However, I will be doing all maintenance and repair from now on $$$$. I am sure there are experts on this site that would be able to help with some of the tough stuff.

While they had it on the stand it was noticed that the guy I bought the bike from devised his own LOWERIN kit. He moved the bushings, that sandwich the shock ends to the frame, to the rear, leaving only a washer and a nut with 5 threads on the nut to hold the shock. It was just about to bust loose. I would have been draggin ass. I fixed it for now and ordered ultima adjustable shocks so I can lower it again. The bike actually handles great a little higher.

My kid put gear drive in his 2006 when it was a month old.

Chris, I wish I had went with the gears now. Not for the slight HP increase but for the reliability.
What about the oil pump change? reliable or not?
