Speedo

My speedo has been posted off to my instrument restorer. I wish I had taken better photo's of it, especially from the rear. The bezel crimp looks like it has never been disturbed. There is an opening at the back of the can, on the side, it is about 1/2 inch wide x 1 inch high, and there is holes tapped either side for screws to hold down a cover plate. Thats what it looks like. If my small memory serves me right the the face is illuminated from the external dash base bulb through suitably placed long horizontal slits in the can. I can't remember exactly, I'll need to post pictures now after it is restored.

I think that this horse is almost too dead to beat but I'll give it one more lick. Keith, if you can contact your instrument guy see if he'll get the face plate number, it may solve this mystery. By all means you should have him return that original plate after he restores the unit.

your fake looks like the remnants of a '54 only unit. or a '55 if the thenths digit on the tripmeter is black on white.

I'll give it a try. Since 8 kilometres per hour equates to five miles per hour, we therefore have 48 kph equates to 30 mph, 64 to 40, and so on up the range. Therefore this is, I guess, a fairly crude attempt at producing a speedometer for the export market.

Only the face-plate would need to be changed anyway; the drive would remain the same no matter what. It is simply a matter of changing the markings on the face-plate to register "whole" numbers.

I just wanted to revisit the discussion about the unusual speedo face. Some-one wanted to know the number off the top of it, and I have a photo.
I saved the face, when I had the instrument restored, but I have since sold it on ebay.
