Sportster Transfer Valve

I have just finished helicoiling several threads in a 73 Sporty engine case and am preparing to glass bead the cases. I read an article on tapping and installing a 6-32 screw in the oil transfer valve between the primary and engine case. has anyone heard of this or done this to their Sporty? Is oil leaking into the primary side a common problem?

The valve only needs to be pluged if you run lots of arm. I ran one with KHK wheels and it would suck the guts out of the transfer valve every 6 months or so untill I pluged it. Can't remenber seeing one sucked on a bike with stock wheels. I replaced one with the bike leaned against a dumpster behind the Albuquerque Hardly dealer in 1970 because they wouldn't let choppers in the shop. Times change!

Thanks Dusty, Is the purpose of this valve to keep the flywheels from wet sumping? if the oil is staying in the bottom end would the check ball not be seating?

MY'59 XL runs 4 5/8 S&S flywheels have never had a problem with the transfer valve. BREWSKI

Well I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it! This machine had an excessive amount of oil in the bottom end when I took it apart, I found the return line pinched in half. I will blast the cases and seat the check ball in it's seat. I was just wondering about the closing off of the valve because I had read about it. Thanks Dusty and Brewski
