WWII UL cases

On Ebay there is this auction for a number side case half (4568325941).The belly number is 41 but the VIN is 46.Did the factory sit on a batch of cases all through the war?It sure looks like it,which is new info to me but makes sense.

The factory did not sit on cases and then use them after the war on 46 production. There were replacement cases made in '41 and so you could possibly have a cases with 41 bottom numbers and a 46 VIN where a dealer replaced bad cases with new cases.

However in this case, the number boss on the 41 case has been ground down and restamped. Further, none of the 46 VIN numbers are factory style with the possible exception of the U & L.

Look like restamps. I think the VIN boss no. 4 should be open top like the belly number and the 6 should be straight backed.

Not only has the boss been cut down and restamped, it looks like you can see the shadows of the original numbers in places.

I checked the pics on the auction with my 41UL because those numbers looked wrong,and boy are they ever.I would have to agree with all of you at this point,even the ghost numbers behind the restamps are visible in my opinion.Good to know the factory did NOT sit on UL cases during the war.Thanks for the replies.
