It's Finally Done
What I have been calling the Flat Boy for a while is done. It took a bit over 3 years due to a bunch of different reasons but here it is.

Thanks guys. Got it running on Friday night. Took it out today and put 63 miles on it just to see how it was and do an oil change. Had one problem on the road. The terminal on the wire from the battery to the main breaker broke off. First road side fix. The bike handles great. With everything being new I am taking it a bit easy with it for a while. The 5 speed gearing pulls good although I haven't gotten it into 5th yet. Keeping the revs and MPH down for a while. With the gearing I have on it, it should go down the highway real good. If the weather hold up should get a few miles on it this weekend.

Thanks guys. Got 125 miles on it so far, the weather took a dump today so the day was cut short. So far no big problems just a couple of minor leaks that needed fixing. I was a bit concerned that the valve springs I found and used might not work out but so far so good. Only time will tell.
I was looking for some info I had here on the valve springs that I found for the motor. I found some of it but can't find all of it. I wanted to post the info a while back but missplaced it. I am hopping they work out OK. The are real close to the ID and OD of the UL spring but shorter. Adjusting the lifters is easy seeing as how the covers will lift pass them. I got them through a local automotive machine shop. Below is the info that I have been able to find in my mess, (I suck at record keeping).
Here's what I have.
Free Length 1.860
Wire diam. .155
Coils 6
Solid Height .900
Height Pressure Pressure at 375 lift
1.440 - 80# - 170#
1.425 - 85# - 175#
1.410 - 90# - 185#
1.375 - 95# - 190#
1.350 - 100# - 200#
I had to make a large stool to make up the difference in length. I also made up some aluminum retainers for them.

You are right about the rubs scratching their heads and that even goes for people that have been doing it for a while. Was at one of the local dealers Saturday. Had a crowed around it. I had mentioned to one guy that I was told buy a few people that I could not do the 5 speed electric start. His reply was sure you can so I asked him how did I do it? His reply was uh uh, if you uh uh well maybe uh uh.
My reply was exactly.

The plan is to probably change the front wheel to a 16 with a full fender or possibly a Fatboy fender next year. Haven't seen a Fatboy fender on a springer yet. Someone probably has done it though. I used to run 21" front wheels a long time ago until I hit a cobble stone on the interstate at 80 MPH. Can you say instant blow out. It was a bitch to keep the bike up but I managed to get to the side of the road and stop. Since then I have allways used 16" front but it was not in the budget for this build. If I use a full front fender, I will more than likely use a repop of an original springer fender and adapt it to the front end. Not a big deal. I don't like the looks of the new style front fender.

Like Fat Dog, I've been following your odessey since you first linked images to this site. We share the combination of new & old. I desired an electric leg for my chosen motor ( Knucklehaed ) over ten years ago. The build was a long drawn out affair. It is very difficult to tastefully blend the new with the old and still have a practical and aesthetically pleasing combination. Mention was made of combining a 16 inch wheel with the softail springer. You said that you thought that you might combine the two along with a Fatboy fender. I did so with Terrapin.
In retrospect I would admit that It "aint right ". Had I been a little more critical, the angle of the mount would have been more complimentary to the lines of the springer and the frame. Enough about me ! Great effort JIm. JKE
