I do know of a story told by flattrack riders
of their then boss, Leonard Andres, who would
smoke flow, with clear heads the K model, then tune by porting and relieving.

I think the designers and engineers working for various manufacturers came up with this first, but only to achieve general all round runability. "the factory standard"
then others, including some of these engineers carried porting and relieving to the specific needs of the particular engine.

I'm sure guys were porting and releaving Model T Fords in the 1920's and before. The earliest dated referance I have is June 1933. This is on a blueprint from the George Riley Co. who manufactured the Riley overhead conversions for Ford Model A's and B's
