dist. base

I am in the process of finally installing my single point dist. I realized i have the base without the notch, which is the wrong style. Can I notch this out to fit the adjusting stud or is this completely out of the question?? I went threw alot to get this timer set up ( another time & another day to explain). Or should I locate proper notched base? thanx, Buddha

Bhudda, give us details; i guess this is a flatty, but is it a stock manual advance, auto-advance, Mallory, Home-bilt or ? distributor. G

Sorry, it's a 45", G model, single points ('48 & up style), manual advance. If thismod. can be done, please give me the specs for the "notch". Is there any difference at all (other than notch) between these 2 dist. bases? Thanx, Buddha

'If you mean?' You have either OEM Part #32580-64 Base [circuit breaker] '64 & '65.
Or later '66+ up, these are auto-advance with totally different internals. Even the base is fastened down differently. The auto-a's have 2 studs come up thru the base cap, whereas Part #32579-49 "HAS THE NOTCH" you describe, but is held down by a retainer clip. W/very different timer shaft housing.
Even if you get the notch dimensions, you would have to place it very correctly & remove the advance weights, & etc..
IMHO, you would NOT get the satisfactory results, anyway.

If you have the Correct "Timer Shaft Housing" I'd just get the right base.

I have (2) timer bases #32506-37 (w/out notch). I realize this is wrong one for it does not allow for the adjusting screw head to fit when I try to assemble unit together. The bases I have are oem. Question is can I "notch" housing to accept adj. screw? If so, what would be the specs (ie., length,height)? This is for manual advance set-up. Palmers book (pg. 390) shows the 2 45" s/v bases, both look identical, except notch. Am I going the wrong route here trying to make this mod or what? thanx again, Buddha

Buddha...unless originality is a concern, why not just use the timing strap and pre 48 points set? That would eliminate the hassle of trying to notch your base and screwing up an original part. Or...you can find 48 and up bases all over the place both NOS and used.

Budda, I agree with René, go ahead and notch it. It isn't rocket science and doesn't need to be exact. Just eyeball it from the pics you have and get it close. It's adjustable via the post and gear position as you drop the ass'y into the timing cover. You haven't really ruined an original piece as it can still be used at a later date with the original type timer head. Just my .02 of course. Dick
