Stripped out generator mounting

Ready to mount my 32e generator in my 42 WLA rebuild to adjust the shims for gear clearance and found one mounting hole in the generator with no threads for about a 1/4 of an inch into the body, and the other mounting hole with a broken tap about 1/4 inch into the hole as well. I'm thinking of re drilling and tapping new mounting holes slightly clockwise of the original holes into the generator. Anybody have thoughts positive or negative on my plan ?

I would helicoil the stripped threaded hole back to standard size and take the genny body to my local machine shop to have the broken tap burned out. Taps can be burned out without damaging the threads.

Thanks PA, not a bad thought. Its just that the 1/4- 24 heli coil kit is pretty pricey and I work for Napa and get it below wholesale, plus the bad thread hole looks a bit egg shaped from a previous owners drill job. Figured the re drill and tapping would work out best.

Re: Stripped out generator mounting

Can you enlarge the stripped hole and add an additional shallow counter sunk pocket, tap it, and turn a plug with the newly tapped thread on the OD and the standard thread on the ID ? I am thinking the plug would resemble a flanged bushing. The flange part would be thin walled to keep the plug from screwing to far.

Re: Stripped out generator mounting

I have a Fan generator that someone drilled and tapped for 1/4-24, in addition to the original 5/16 sae holes. No reason not to take the easy way out and just go with 2 new holes if that's easiest for you.
