About oil return

Hi guys,

Just got Mine to roll again, with new cyls, etc.
I added oil filter into return line (from a Panhead) some time ago. So now when I started "new" engine I could see how oil circulates. I wondered that last season also (now new cyls).
From return line oil comes at idle as pulses. Do not want to throttle much more now, when new things in. Seems like oil amount has to raise to some level in cranck-case and then it spits it out. As a "batch". Should it be constant flow or what?

Intermittent spurts are normal.
Return pump is higher capacity than the supply pump, in order to stop oil build up in the crankcases, so it sucks air as well as oil back to the tank as level in cases rises and falls that little bit.

Jon, Remember that idling a fresh engine for long periods of time should be avoided.

Doh What's wrong with idling a fresh engine for long periods, other than cylinder cooling.

About one quart every twelve minutes @ 2000 rpm's is normal oil flow for the flathead pump.
