Speedo cable removal

Should I be able to pull the inner speedo cable out from the rear wheel end in order to grease it up?
Or do I have to take off the speedo and remove the inner cable from that end?

Also, is there anywhere that sells the little speedo drive gear that goes on the drive unit on the end of the speedo cable?
Or do I have to buy the whole unit?
It looks like my Dad at some stage over the years pressed a plastic gear onto the turned down remains of the original steel gear. Now the plastic gear has stripped.
