I have a long standing personal issue with my 45 shifter gate. When i engage my 2 gear ( which is real "finiky" BTW. it does not line up where it should be. I do have the correct gate for my year and i do not think adjusting the linkage rod would make a different. My 1 gear is way up against the end of gate and the second is where the neutral should be and third is way off and early as where it should normally be any ideals??? Thanks Frank
Transmission shifter clutch shimming is out of specs....or...shifter drum has to much end play....or....shifter drum paths are worn excessively....or...shifter fork finger rollers worn....or...shifter forks worn....the list is long. May be time to overhaul the gearbox and bring it back to oem specs.
Thanks for the picture. Mine is for sure not the 47 version 1 gear being low near the rider knee. Mine looks like the sidecar/reverse version but it doesn't have the " R" stamp on it plus when my 1 gear is fully engage it basically touch the end of the gate. ??? With this picture this is pretty well where my 2 gear gets engage i'm not the sharpess knife in the drawer but i know its wrong...lolll

45 shifter rods only fit 45s so it is hard to have a wrong one, other than early or late. One has a clevis, the other a hook. Big twin rods don't fit. But Big Twin shift gates definitely fit the holes in the tanks! Does your three speed gate have a big blank spot forward of the #1? If so it is Big Twin.
I have the every same trouble with my 45s, it only became a problem when i put reverse into the gear box's , tried 2 different aftermarket gates from 2 suppliers, re time box for no reverse and refitted original shift gate all ok, Looks like may be the after market shifter gate settings is not in the right spot with tank mount holes.?? I have adjusted the linkage to work, ok, but 3 is 1/2 way between 2nd and 3rd. with reverse hard up against it's end.
I think I will buy one from 45 restoration out of Albany NY. I have had lots of succes with them in the past and the quality is there. My 1 choice would be a NOS but that could take a while to find . Unless someone has one in the secret drawer..lolll
I got my 2nd one from 45 parts, the gate did not even match the contour of the tank, may be the manufacturer just did a copy of the BT gate??? and just labeled as one to suit a 45, not much NOS or after market fits straight on out of the box.

My 45 would either jump out of first gear or jump out of third gear, no matter how I adjusted the rod. So, I made the slot in the gate a little bit longer in the third gear position. Now it adjusts out and works fine.
