WLA45 frame dimensions

Hi all

I'm hoping that one of you good folks can assist me in obtaining the dimensions of a WLA45 frame?

I am currently overhauling the engine and transmission of a 1942 wla which belonged to my Father, he and a friend used to race these on grass tracks with the sidecar attached during the early sixties as they were very very cheap to buy.
After quiting racing to do other things, two of the Harleys were sold for £10 to the scouts and the third stripped down. When we moved house in 68, the engine and transmission were taken and the rest left behind!!!!!

Obviously the frames are expensive and I have the facilities at work to make a frame but need the dims. Can anyone help PLEASE?

The dimensions found in Servcar service manuals will help a bunch. From the seat post forward the solo and servicar geometry is the same. The rear frame section behind the seat post is another issue. Pa

thanks Curt , but the repro-frames are the cheapest to buy today .

i have completely stopped my production of 45' frames many years before , but i still have the perfect JIG to build them
at the exact size/geometry/dimensions . ( 45' frames ONLY with standard OR "racing" ground clearance )
if Qitman was i France : i would be okay to sell him this jig .
unfortunately : the price to pay JUST to send it to the USA will be as expensive as buying one repro frame now at Kurt's ( heavy crate )

Qitman : you said you have the knowlege to build your own frame :
you'll need more of that , i think .

there's a complete world between a 45' frame and a "bobber" frame for 45' .
it depends what kind of 45' you want to assemble ...

problems happens when it's time to work on the 45' gearbox section ...

I live in Suffolk on the East Coast of England!

What I'm looking to build is more of a Bobber with the front end and wheels off my '76 Z900 (which has been had updated parts fitted). I hope to keep the 45 basic with no lights etc, so it would be similar to the old racers which originally struggled against the Indians in the late 30's?

Like you mentioned, the trannie will cause the problems?

yes : the way the gearbox is fitted to frame means big work ( if you want to keep the WL gearbox ).
the gearbox is holded by a complex casting you have to reproduce perfectly .
many lazer-cut parts you will have to bend ( give them a shape ) and assemble together with a special tooling .

the new manufactured custom-frames using a big-twin gearbox are better IMHO .

but that's true : the best ( cheaper if you build all by yourself ) way is installing a British gearbox .
