Try Pecard Antique Leather Dressing . This product was developed to restore horse sadles from 1800s. I use it all the time on my vintage leather jackets from the 40s and 30s and old seats - the product does magic without destroing the threads or metal parts. http://www.pecard.com/
Years ago I used to use a product called Leatherique. They had a leather softener-conditioner, that softened the leather, then colored finishes that could be applied over the softener, once the leather was brought back to life. Since the products were designed to be used together, they worked particularly well, since with many products once you get the conditioner on the leather is too oily to refinish. There are a lot of products that will soften dried out old leather, but very few that will then let you refinish/recolor it, and do a good job of it.
The conditioner was a heavy, oily product, and smelled like it had a lot of lanolin in it. Did a terrific job, better than any of a dozen or so competing products I have used over the years - I used to joke that if you could dump a can of it on King Tut he would sit up and start doing interviews. Anyhow, the company has vanished a few times, and changed hands a few more, but I notice there seems to be a current incarnation, and they claim to be using the original formula. If they are, I highly recommend the stuff.
