indian chief piston rings

I have been told to watch out for the piston ring sets with the 3 piece oil rings. They carry a spring pressure of about 20 lbs. while what should be used is a spring pressure of about 7 to 9 lbs. This will act like it is honing the cylinder and wear it out in about 500 miles. It is better to use the 1 piece oil ring and get at least 5000 miles out of your mill.

So how do you adjust it?

I must address that directly with a set of Sutter rings purchased some time ago.

It would not surprise me if Hastings has given up cast oil rings altogether. Cheap oriental imports certainly have.

Ross Pistons says: do NOT grind the expanders.
Wow does that make it difficult.

Smash he expander carefuly with a pair of needle nose. I paticurally like the vise grip needle nose on the Leatherman Crunch as you can adjust the opening after they snap and get everything much more even.

I've got a pair of WLD cylinders with late thin rings on the pistons, just a re-ring on the bench....

But the oilring assembly alone puts 30 pounds of drag on the pistons.
