Did a little digging and I'm pretty sure that shaftdrive bike is a BMW R35, 1937-1940. The exhaust should run outside the frame on the left side, gaters at the bottom of the forks, badge should mount in the triangulated are behind the neck, 4 rivets midway down the front downtubes. Also was a small production run behind the iron curtain,47-48,using up old stocks at Eisenach. Then having rear plunger til early 50's suspension called the EMW (Eisenacher Motoren Werke). The other bike reminds me of a Panther or P&M. Hain't sorted that yet.

Hoot,I was thinking that maybe that wasn't an Indian after I posted a reply. It didn't quite match up to the few photo's of 841's that I have.

Found a possible clue to the second bike. It might be an Ariel 500 or 600cc from the 30's. I found a picture of what might be the smaller 248cc 1931 version, Model: LB31. The construction is almost identical, frame angles, angle of cylinder, tank with shift gate mounts, handlebar mounting. Most of the large flathead english singles were meant for sidecar use and the OHV's solo bikes. It appears to have a Lucas mag/dyno on it with the generator missing. Check the tag on the mag, it should have a date on it which may be the original one from the bike.

There's a real nice picture of 1937 BMW at www.motorcycle.com in the virtual museum section. Also good picture of this model in military trim. Also good shot of Indian model 841. And a little history.

The Top Photo looks like a version of the Russian copy of the BMW
Bottom Pic's handlebars appear to be BMW
