Engine numbers

I need some guidelines in deciphering the motor numbers on Indian Chief cases. I seem to have some variance over four cases, Also I am looking for oil pumps. It has been 16 years since I last restored an Indian and have let most all of my ref. materials get away.

30's 40' and 50's use the code first letter C for chief F for Sport Scout G for government 741 B for Standard Scout D for Four and E for Junior Scout the second and third letter represent the year ie DO=40 CI=39 ect.

What I am most concerned about is the size of the stamps and the "B" at the end of the serial number. For example I have in large stamps that fill the pad nearly top to bottomone case with SN CDG 6212 with a B stamped off the pad. Then I have a CDG 6766B stamped with smaller stamps and the B is on the pad. Something ain't right.

The letters should be 1/4" and the B witch stands for battery ignition should not be on the raised boss but rather on the side of the case just after the boss. Its a real problem when those numbers were restamped it was legal as Indian used the frame number for the title (even though alot were changed to engine numbers by tag agents who did what ever they wanted)alot of rebuilders ground the numbers off so you could stamp a number to match the bike. Most decide to restamp with numbers that look correct or have the local mvd issue numbers. Several states are rabid about this (ask Cotten)and will take your bike even though the change was legal when done.
