640 hubs...Military or civilian?

How does one determine whether hub is civilian or military? (besides one being/not being green)

Also, on the rear frame which side of the brake crossover shaft gets the angled grease fitting? It is probably self-explanatory if you have a tranny, but since I haven't got one yet...

I din't realize that 640 Military Scout used a different hub than the 640 Sport Scout. I have a 'barn fresh' 640 Military Scout and will look at the grease zerks.

Thanks for the reply. I was not aware of it until reading an article...Ziggy describes hubs as military/civilian
and I just can't tell by looking at the pictures. I have a hub that had a 41-42 brake cover on it when received as a complete wheel...I see 641 hubs and 640 hubs listed and wondered if hubs/covers are interchangeable, military or civilian.

I just compared a wheel from a skirted fender 640 to a pair of mil surpluss wheels still in od. Cant find any difference except the finish.

The 1940 and up hubs have a 2 piece plate welded onto the brake drum which covers the spool flange as seen in the pictures above. I am not sure if early 640 civilian hubs were ever built without this but at least the front hub continued like this through 42. I am unfamiliar with 41-42 rears. If you can see the brake side flange on your hub, it is correct for 34-39 but be careful you don't have Junior scout or 741 hub, they are narrower.
