Magneto

On another thread I asked about magnetos. This time I have a question about chrome magnetos,I have a chromed Fairbanks-Morse on my 1959 XL.,S&S bottom end ,dual carb heads,etc. I had it rebuilt by Morris magneto,who stated that the scrap rate for chromed magnetos is 50%. Whhy is this so? TIA BREWSKI

I purchased a chromed magneto at a swap meet. The chrome was peeling, so I sandblasted and powdercoated. It's on an engine now and is working fine.

I've heard chromed generators, starter motors, timers, and the like have a tendency to arc and short out. Maybe the chromed magneto is simular.

50% of all magnetos get thrown in the scrap.
