Rocker Box Leak

I have an 82 Shovelhead that I can not get the o-ring seals on the ends of the rocker arms to stop leaking. i have changed them 4 times and after a few hundred miles and a run of between 50-70mph they are leaking again. The motor has 12,000 original miles and only seeps at a couple of the oil hose clamps. I am running 60wt Valvoline in her now. Any suggestions appreciated.

There are sets of white neopreme o-rings that just about any of the aftermarket dealers have listed. I'm pretty sure CCI, V_Twin and Midwest have them listed. They do a great job of stopping that particular leak.

Have you got some kind of a score or slight damage in the rocker box along the surface of the holes where the O rings fit? I never had this problem with any of my shovels. Black neoprenes always worked fine in my experience.

Do you use any kind of sealer or anything on the o-rings? I haven't been able to remove the cap screws from the rocker arms, I double nutted the rockershaft from the primary side and I still can't get the cap screws loose. When I get them loose I'll check the bore, I have worked on a lot of shovels and this is the first like this.

If they are anything like Sportster ones, the seals are burn't on to both the cap and the box. Try soaking them with PB Blaster for a few days to soften them up first. Pa

A good 3/8" impact will rattle them loose. Or a real (no cheepo specials) hand impact.

I always put them in dry. Now and then I had to impact a cap or two off and I use the hex caps. Whenever I came across the screw driver type slotted caps I replaced them.

For what its worth, I have had a few over the years where the shaft would spin with the plug and the only way I could get the plugs out was to use an impact on the plug side and another slightly faster impact on the nut side (loosening on the plug side and tightening on the nut side). There are also oversize orings available to help seal them (though I don't recall ever using them). Part number is 11101x
