82 Shovel missfiring

Postby Neil74 on Sun Feb 28, 2010 7:42 pm

My 82 FXE has started backfiring an missing sporadically, I suspect the gel battery is giving up after 2 yrs of use. While trouble shooting I checked the ohms of my coil, oem # 31609-80, according to the shop manual primary should be 3.3 to 3.7 ohms and secondary should be 16,500 to 19,500 ohms. I am getting 4.5 primary and 23,900 secondary, do these high readings show coil as being bad? I have allways found readings to be low or no readings at all on other bad units, I am ordering a new coil but wondering if readings show bad?

Without looking at my referance material, which I have somewhere, to get the exact numbers. I can tell you that the coils used with points and condenser have a higher reading on the primary then those used with electronic ignition. 4.5 sounds right for points. Working from memory the electronic coils would read something like 2.5 ohms. Do 82 shovels use the factory electronic pick up?

Yes factory pickups, had one delivered here but had to return it, waiting on a new one an hope they get it right this time. The one they sent was 3.3 ohms on primary but only 11,000 ohms on secondary. Only coils I know of with 11,000 ohms on secondary are 6-volt an they are also 5 ohms on primary, so new coil was junk, glad I tested it before putting it on.

The pickup in the nosecone was testing good and bad depending on how it felt:) I pulled the electronic ignition out, put it in the trash and installed points. It's so nice having it back to where I can adjust it, and trouble shoot it on the road. Purrrrs like a kitten once again:)
