3 speed w/reverse question

Hi Ya all ,

I have a question regarding converting to a 3 speed with reverse so I can run a hack , what year trannys have the reverse idler shaft capability ?

I'm not an expert, but it seems Most of the ones from the '40's I've seen had the hole drilled and blocked with a cap.

It would be easier to buy a complete 3&R transmission than it would be to gather all the 3&R parts needed.

the tranny is probably just as tough to find that is why I posted the original ? I assumed it would be like a 45 ----remove the spacer and inser the reverse gear.I have nothing going yet as I am still undecided as to either BT or 45 to build. Looking at parts prices on flea bay and others it would seem more economical to build a big twin. Strange how things chang 20 yr ago when I last rode no one wanted 45 parts , now they are the high ticket items

You assume incorrectly. Everything except the shafts are different in a Big Twin 3&R

And by the way, building a Big Twin is still vastly more expensive than building a 45 ... Probably nearly double. Frames, engines, transmissions, tanks ... you name it. The actual restoration costs may be similar in terms of repair, overhaul, paint, etc., but the basic parts are still far more expensive. And that cost is reflected in the values of the finished bikes ... Well restored 45s routinely sell for not much more than half of what a well restored Big Twin from the 40s or 50s will go for.

Three speed and reverse parts are not easy to find, nor complete gearboxes. As a long time hack owner/rider I question you reasoning for wanting a 3&R box. Other than the novelty of reverse the are a pain in the ass. By eliminating one forward gear and poorly splitting the ratios they create a situation where no one gear is ever right. If i build another combo it will have a 4 speed box. It is really easy to push a hack backwards, easier than a two wheeler since you don't have to hold it up. Just don't park nose in downhill!

My hack is easy to park without reverse. You will learn how to swing into position for a easy back in.
