Well .
remember the "Joe Petrali ? "( topic "is this a racer , or a bobber ? " )
i will bring it back to my workshop soon coz of troubles in motor .

i have had the owner on the phone , and thru what he said to me ; my "verdict" is following :

- one bearing exploded in the generator.
- generator blocked and burned
- the génerator has turned , cutting the two screws who holded it thru the camcover

the scoot starts , but can't no more lift up in power

i think front cylinder don't work .
coz of the exhaust valve
i think some teeth broken on the front exhaust cam .
and now : the ex. cam is no more correctly "timed" .

Cam teeths and things broken under the cam cover .
i hope the cases are not dead ....

i will have the J.P.back home next week .

but right now : i ask you all :

the BEST cams sets for a U motor ???

Recently, I happened to see a brand new Sifton cam set. They looked good quality. I think you can buy it through V-Twin mfg dealers. If my memory serves me correctly it's listed in their vintage catalog.

Sifton makes cams for ULs !
this is a good news !!!! Sifton is a brand mark with good quality réputation , i believe .
i am gonna search more on this tomorrw !!!

Fran-6.......e-mail me. Those are our cams that V-Twin puts the Sifton name on. I don't have them on the 45" Parts Depot site, but will have them on our new BT sidevalve site soon.

i pick up the scoot next saturday , and as soon as i have opened its "womb" ( god : i am afraid by advance of what i'm gonna find inside ...) : i'll keep you posted !

Milwakee Belle: I remember this bike. I loved the color and the trim on the oil bag and on your primary if memory serves me. Much too sad to hear that a failed gen bearing can cause this much damage. Very good to hear that 45 Parts Depot will make new cams for these. Good luck on the repair and please show us what you find. Did you use a 32E or did you use a 12 volt gen on this bike? Steve

The Gen is the original one converted into 12 Volts with a 45' PD Kit .
i don't think i have made any "error" , converting this gen ...all have been verifyed and tested ...
so , after a first discussion about it with my "mentor" : i have TWO solutions :
-1 : bearing exploded
-2 : bad work about me ...( Huh ! i want to see where i have made an error !!! )

relax , guys : the scoot is NOT under a bus and the owner is NOT dead !
i leave my workshop in two days for one full-month of scuba-diving and hunt in corsica .

i will see all this with a fresh-quiet Brain in August :wink:

Kurt, just curious, is the Sifton name owned by V-Twin or 45 Parts Depot? Are all parts sold as Sifton by V-Twin made by you? Thanks, it can be very helpful to know the origen of parts when ordering.

It's a V-Taiwan name.

No, it seems just the parts that relate to what Sifton used to make......now made wherever and as cheap as possible. If he could do our cams in China, I'm sure he would.

Well :
more fear than damages !
i am just good to start a new generator convertion into 12 Volts and the JPM will be on the road again ( Pheeeew :oops: )

i don't have opened the camcover : just checked up tooth by tooth the "fool gear" thru the gen.hole in the motor :
all is clean and looks like brand-new : so : i think there are absolutely no damages on the cams teeth : i will verify this when i'll start again the scoot .
the owner said me something kinda".... it starts , but dot lift up no more in RPM " that's why i believed one cam was damaged ; but now : i think it was because ll the electrical wiring was totally GROUNDED by the gen fire ...

the Ghizmo has simply exploded ( :lol: )
i have found small éléctronical comps. here and there , glued on the crankcase ....

well , folks :
old harleys are OLD harleys ...
and that's what arrives when you don't take time to tight-up a bit your screws ( customers ARE and always WILL BE customers :oops: )

...and next time ? will-he loose the gearbox ???
