i have just won a pair of S&S flathead power ul cylinders on ebay, this is the kit with the valves and pistons etc.., i made an offer of about half what they were asking and they accepted. my question is it seems that the piston are fitted, they are marked front and rear, looks like the valves are marked too. i was wondering if S&S sells this kit ready to bolt up, valves seated, piston and rings fitted? the cylinders had a few chipped fins from shipping, all chipped pieces are included.

I did a search here for "fin repair" and came up with 22 threads. Some of them should help.

Silver solder works very well for repairing broken cast iron fins, and requires less heat than brazing does.

thanks folks, h.d.ryder I checked with one of the backshop guys and we have silver solder, says its pricey. i work for a steam railroad, anybody have any input on technique to use silver solder rod for fin repair? preheat the cylinder? we have several guys that are excellent welders....some braze, some tig and mig and still others stick/arc. i guess the ones who braze the casting for the RR would be the best choice for this job?

Hey Mark, The silver solder I use is pricey, but it works real well. I buy it from my local welding shop, it`s the stick
type, with the flux coating like a brazing rod. I have one of those mini acetylene outfits that the jewelers use.
Just make sure the surface is super clean and the 2 parts will stick like glue.
