S&S Cycle® Inc. is phasing out Flathead Power® as the name of their brand for vintage engine parts for American v-twins. However, there is no cause for alarm among vintage motorcycle enthusiasts. This is a change in name only! S&S Cycle maintains its commitment to the vintage bike community and will continue to provide the same quality parts for service, restoration, and performance upgrades. Performance parts for these classic engines will continue to be offered through the Vintage section of the S&S Catalog, while service parts will be available through S&S Cycle’s Viola V-Twin® line.
There are a number of reasons for this change, one of which is the confusion caused by the Flathead Power name itself. Long time Flathead Power fans often find it hard to believe, but a lot of vintage bike enthusiasts are not familiar with the brand. S&S learned that when most consumers heard or saw the name, they thought the brand only offered parts for flathead engines. So, a lot of potential customers who could benefit from our products for knuckles, pans and shovels don’t give Flathead Power a second glance. Getting these folks on board can only help the vintage v-twin community.
Here’s another point to ponder. S&S was established in 1958. At that time, most of the engines we now consider vintage were the current models or weren’t even in production yet. Making parts for these bikes is nothing new for S&S. So we now refer to them as S&S Proven Performance Products for Vintage American V-twins.
The Viola V-Twin quality service parts line is a fairly recent development at S&S, and its focus is keeping American V-twins of all ages on the road. VVT is all about making premium quality service parts available to S&S dealers, so they in turn can provide routine service work for their customers. Owners of vintage motorcycles nowadays are more apt to be concerned with restoring and keeping them running than with making them go faster. Viola V-Twin offers a large number of hard to find, high quality service parts for vintage engines that can help. Some VVT parts are made by S&S, but others are sourced from some of the leading manufacturers in the v-twin marketplace: if at all possible, from U.S. companies.
Another item that will change in name only is the current “Flathead Power Forum” on the S&S website. This forum has long been a meeting place for like-minded vintage enthusiasts to help each other out with technical advice, know-how, and a good measure of friendly BS. It will continue to be just that, only it now will be called the S&S Vintage Forum. Same BS, new name.
