REV LIMITER

The S&S IST ignition system has a variable rev limiter which is preset at 6250 rpm, but can be reduced or raised to a maximum of 7200 rpm using the optional S&S Guardian™ Diagnostic System software. The ability to reduce the rev limit is very attractive to owners of balanced Harley-Davidson® Twin Cam 88B™ engines who are concerned about damaging the balancers by over revving. Here's how the rev limiter works. When the engine speed reaches the rev limit, the module goes into a "stutter-fire" mode (a noticeable but not severe combination of fires & misfires). Should the engine speed continue to increase to 256 rpm above the rev limit, the ignition stops sparking the engine until the engine rpm falls below the rev limit. A break-in rev limit program is also available to protect new and rebuilt engines from damage. When this feature is enabled, using the Guardian Diagnostic System software, the initial rev limit is set at 4250 rpm, and increases in three steps, reaching the maximum of 6250 rpm when the engine has accumulated 24 hours of operation. Once enabled, the break-in rev limit program cannot be canceled. It should be noted that IST ignition modules sold with complete S&S engines are slightly different in that they have a maximum rev limit of 6250 rpm and the break-in rev limiter is enabled. The maximum rev limit in those modules cannot be increased.

INSTALLATION

The new S&S Intelligent Spark Technology ignition system can be installed quickly and easily without permanent modifications to the stock wiring harness on 1994-' 06 motorcycles. S&S wiring harness adapters plug directly into the stock wiring harness of late model carbureted motorcycles. 1986-' 93 Sportster® models along with 1984-' 93 and some 1994 big twin models require minor wiring harness modifications. Once the system is installed, it requires no adjustment. Ignition timing is automatic. You don't need a timing light.

The same IST module is used for all engines. Installation kits are available that allow connection to the stock wiring harness for specific applications.

works great if it works! if your building from scratch like me , dont get this ignition, waaaayyyyy too many wires and sensors to try to hide. now i have problems with it to make things worse.

Fit this to my 04 XL883 in preperation for a 1250 conversion. The bike has SE intake and pipes with N2 cams. All I can say is it has made a huge improvement in power and throttle response. The bike pulls much harder now, runs smoother and starts and idles so much better. HD really should have been using this system as stock. It may cost a bit more than other units, but with this you can plug it in and forget it. You cange change your motor around and it adapts on it's own . I can't recommend this unit highly enough.

Installed on my '06 R model shortly after purchase. Best mod I've ever done on any bike. 95,000 plus miles to date and has never missed a beat. Two big pluses for me have been operation with bad gas- the only way I know I got some was about a 10% drop in mileage. Also when running in the mountains at elevations it pulls like the provebial frieght train. F.W.I.W. when I had the front head off recently, to replace a broken exhaust stud, i was amazed to see how absolutely clean the piston top and bottom of the head were! And there was a barely perceptable tiny ring of carbon around the top of the cylinder, hard to even feel with your finger. Also, my aftermarket air filter routes crankcase vapor into the intake tract- so much for those that claim it will gum up an engine.

Worked fine on my 99 fed 95ci, 95hp, just up to a 124and only got 98hp, changed to crane and got 123hp, not sure but ist was too carefull

Purchesed this IST unit 5 yrs ago and have had it on a 88ci,95ci,and a 117ci. It has worked GREAT in all 3 motors and it self ajusted for oputomim timeing curve. I have hade 0 problems with this unit and would buy again If needed
