S&S CA engines have been certified under the requirements of MSO #2008-02 issued by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) on February 7, 2008. This MSO contains similar procedures for engine manufacturers to certify engines in CA, making it possible for bike builders and small volume manufacturers in all 50-States to build emission legal motorcycles without testing them and without having to certify them with the CARB. While many of the same requirements of the EPA engines apply to the CA engines, there are additional requirements for the evaporative system, labeling, and reporting that are required.
