S&S X-Wedge® Engines

 

49-State and 50-State Emissions Compliant Engines & Performance Engines

S&S X-Wedge EngineThe X-Wedge® engine is an S&S proprietary design with a 56° cylinder angle and three belt driven cams. Requires a special frame as it will not fit in frames designed for Harley-Davidson® engines.
The X-Wedge® engine (pronounced Ex-Wedge or Cross-Wedge, take your pick) is an S&S® designed 56° pushrod v-twin with three belt driven cams in a unique configuration that provides nearly straight pushrod angles to all valves. In the lower end, a one-piece forged crankshaft with automotive style, plain bearing connecting rods and plain main bearings offers greater load capacity and increased engine durability and reduced noise. The cylinder heads were designed with automotive style low-mass rocker arms and a unique cross-flow wedge style combustion chamber. The fuel system consists of an S&S single bore throttle body and Variable Fuel Injection module, which boasts dual closed loop feedback for fuel control and knock sensing ignition. X-Wedge engines are available in 117 or 132 cubic inch displacement, and in silver powdercoat, black wrinkle powdercoat, and polished finishes.

Custom Bikes... Yes You Can! Anyone Can!

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules allow nearly anyone to build, license, sell, and/or drive an emissions legal custom motorcycle, without applying for certification at all. The requirements are that the bike be powered by a certified engine package and meet the requirements for vehicle weight, gearing, and exhaust. In fact, you can build up to 2999 such street legal bikes a year. This information is detailed in a letter of guidance that was issued by the EPA on July 25, 2006.

It should be noted that this is an EPA rule, and that it does not apply in the state of California, which is governed by the stricter standards of the California Air Resources Board (CARB). However, S&S also offers special engine packages for California residents. See page 6 of this section.

Options For 49 State Engines

S&S Cycle is pleased to offer two styles of 49 state EPA engine packages for “new
build” bikes. The first engine style is the S&S X-Wedge® engine, and the second
style is the V-Series engine for 1984-’99 style aftermarket big twin chassis. All
engines are completely assembled and come with all required documentation
and instructions for correct installation. All engines include an installation
manual, a service manual, and Mobil 1® motor oil.

Note the S&S 49-State engines are certified for new vehicle builds only, and are
not intended as a replacement engine in an existing motorcycle.
  • The 49-State X-Wedge engine is only available in one configuration, which is the 117 cubic inch X117E. The X117E is available in silver powdercoat, black wrinkle powdercoat, and polished finishes. The X-Wedge engine requires a special frame, and several well-known frame manufacturers already offer a number of X-Wedge compatible frames available in various styles, with more on the way. See Section 10 of this catalog for X-Wedge frames. All X117E engines come with S&S closed loop single bore fuel injection with knock sensing ignition. Special X-Wedge engine packages are available for sale in California. See page 8 of this section.
  • 49-State V-Series engines are available in three displacements and are carbureted only. The V96E, V113E and V124E have 96, 113, and 124 cubic inch displacement respectively, and are available in natural, black and polished finishes. These engines fit aftermarket frames with motor mounts for 1984-’99 big twins. The V96E engine comes with the S&S Super Stock® ignition, while the V113E and V124E engines come with the S&S IST® ignition.
NOTES:
  • These engines are not to be used in a previously certified vehicle or a custom motorcycle built from a previously certified vehicle.
  • S&S 49 State EPA Certified engine packages are only available through S&S dealers and select distributors.
SPECIAL NOTES:
Here are the requirements for bikes built with S&S EPA certified engine packages, in order
for them to be compliant with current regulations.
  • Vehicles must have a maximum N/V ratio* of no greater than 43.3 for V-Series, and 44.7 for X-Wedge®.
  • X-Wedge engines come with a special “emissions” VFI module. Maps are locked and cannot be changed, but all diagnostic functions and wheel speed gear factor can be accessed.
  • Maximum vehicle curb mass for V96E and V113E engines is 992 lb.
  • Maximum vehicle curb mass for V124E and X117E engines is 1058 lb.
  • Exhaust system selected must create backpressure within the specified limits.
*Engine rpm divided by miles per hour in top gear.

S&S® California Engines

S&S X-Wedge California EngineS&S engines for sale or use in all 50 states including the state of California are similar to the 49-State versions, but have additional components, which allow them to meet the evaporative emissions requirements. All engines come with a carbon canister, vapor valve, and non-permeable tubing for installation. Both the V-Series engines, for 1984-’99 style big twin aftermarket frames, and the S&S designed X-Wedge® engines are available to residents of all 50 states. The V-Series engines are available with displacements 100” 113” and 124”, while the X-Wedge is only available with a 117” displacement.

These engines are for use in “new build” custom vehicles, but in the near future we hope to be able to offer a replacement V-Series engine for installation in existing 1984-’99 Harley-Davidson® big twin motorcycles.

SPECIAL NOTES:
Here are requirements for bikes built with S&S California engine packages, in order for them to be compliant with current regulations. This is very similar to the requirements for the 49-State engines with a few extra steps.
  • Vehicles must have a maximum N/V ratio* of no greater than 43.3 for V-Series, and 44.7 for X-Wedge.
  • Maximum vehicle curb mass for V96E and V113E engines is 992 lb.
  • Maximum vehicle curb mass for V124E and X117E engines is 1058 lb.
  • Exhaust system selected must create backpressure within the specified limits.
  • X-Wedge® engines come with a special “emissions” VFI module. Maps are locked and cannot be changed, but all diagnostic functions and wheel speed gear factor can be accessed.
  • Builder must return the included agreement form and required photographs of the vehicle to S&S before a manufacture's statement of origin (MSO) for the engine can be issued. Until the MSO is issued, the vehicle is not considered to be certified and the MSO is required to title a custom vehicle.
  • Maximum fuel capacity is five gallons.

Want to hit the racetrack or drag strip? S&S also offers performance versions. While not compliant for
street usage, these engines are offered in two different displacements: 117 cubic inches and a massive
132 cubic inch engine! X-Wedge engines are available in your choice of silver powdercoat, wrinkle black
